What is Acupuncture ?
I am trained and registered to perform medical acupuncture. This is very different to ‘dry needling’ a service commonly performed by physiotherapists. Medical acupuncture is an ancient therapy that has its roots in traditional Chinese medicine. For over 2500 years it has been used to treat a wide variety of conditions particularly those involving pain.
The body has a system of energy pathways (meridians), that can become blocked or imbalanced leading to disease. By stimulating specific points on these meridians using fine needles or laser, acupuncture can help restore balance and promote healing.
Needle vs Laser – Which is better ?
There are hundreds of studies from around the world that have found both needle and laser acupuncture to be effective when performed by a skilled practitioner.
I utilise a variety of modalities including Needles, Laser, Acupressure, Electroacupuncture and Moxibustion. All of them can be effective however, there are circumstances where Laser acupuncture is preferred.
Benefits of Laser Acupuncture
-
It's painless - No needles mean no pain! Laser is a great option for people who dislike needles, including children and sensitive adults.

-
It’s safe - I use the latest state-of-the-art lasers that are low-power and non-invasive. They DO NOT damage tissue. Laser can be used safely in most patients including those with poor circulation, fragile skin, or infections.

-
It has no side effects - The risk of bleeding/infection is zero as there is no penetration of skin. Laser is a preferred method of acupuncture in patients who are on blood thinners, immunocompromised, or at higher risk of infection.

-
The dosage is adjustable - Laser can be fine-tuned to enhance its effectiveness. For example, by using different wave-lengths, different power outputs, and different amounts of pressure, the body can be stimulated in different ways.

-
Laser acupuncture is fast - We’re talking seconds in comparison to needle acupuncture which may take 30 minutes.
